1 - Executive ROI Decision Framework
Helping enterprise retailers evaluate next-generation loss-prevention investments
Background
In 2019, Sensormatic introduced a new generation of premium Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) garment tags that offered stronger theft protection, faster removal at checkout, lower labor requirements, reduced inventory shrink, and fewer stock-outs.
The challenge wasn't whether the technology worked—it did.
The challenge was demonstrating why retailers should invest in a premium solution that cost two to three times more than traditional tags.
At the time, the company frequently relied on third-party consulting firms to develop ROI tools for major product launches. These tools were expensive to produce and often saw limited adoption within the sales organization because they were difficult to tailor and cumbersome to use.
Our sales organization needed something different: a practical decision framework that sales representatives could confidently use with retail executives during customer engagements.
My Role
I designed and developed an interactive executive ROI decision framework that translated operational improvements into measurable financial outcomes.
The application allowed sales teams to evaluate multiple investment scenarios while adjusting variables unique to each retailer.
Capabilities included:
Multi-year investment projections (1, 3, and 5-year views)
Payback analysis
Labor savings
Shrink reduction
Revenue improvement from increased inventory availability
Executive-ready printable summaries
International multi-currency support
Design Philosophy
One of the guiding principles behind this project came from lessons I learned studying architecture and graphic design:
Making something simple often requires more effort than making it complex.
Rather than overwhelming executives with spreadsheets, I focused on presenting the information they needed in a format that was intuitive, visually clear, and immediately actionable.
The objective wasn't to build a sophisticated calculator.
It was to make complex investment decisions easier.
That same philosophy continues to guide how I design executive dashboards, KPI architectures, and AI-enabled decision systems today.
Business Results
The framework became an important sales-enablement asset for premium product launches beginning in 2019.
It was:
Adopted across major U.S. retail accounts
Expanded for international sales teams
Adapted for subsequent premium hardware launches
Used as the foundation for additional software ROI frameworks
Recognized internally for helping simplify executive purchasing decisions
The solution contributed to product launches that ultimately generated more than $100 million in new revenue, while demonstrating that thoughtfully designed internal decision frameworks could deliver greater adoption than more expensive third-party alternatives.
